I did wonder if the option to save himself by killing his friend was a test to see how "noble" he was in reality in comparison to the story he told. As well as looking at his own son, and seeing what he extinguished. Clearly the end scene was lost on this viewer in which it's clear to me that not only is he haunted by his actions, but Likely wondering if they will come back to take retribution against his own son. To take a clearly conscientious man who's crime was to accidentally shoot a boy and to have agreed against his good nature to cover up the crime, and turn him into a murderer seems pretty just to me. Surprised that one of the reviews stated they felt the ending was unjust. Well acted, thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommended. Where "A lonely place to die" started off so brilliantly but staved off to very average near the end, I felt this film managed to maintain momentum and avoided straying from a film that explored moral dilemmas into something ludicrous. This film really borrowed from the premise of "A lonely place to die" and maybe "Eden Lake" creating an intense foreboding atmosphere that a remote and beautiful Uk location can create.

I won't spoil anything about what happens, but I will say that if you are looking for a really good thriller, this one will fit the bill nicely. The movie is also well made, with good cinematography and genuine atmosphere you'll really feel the cold and the wet. The story isn't fast-paced, but there is a lot of local color along the way to liven things up and keep you interested even when there isn't any tensions. The two central characters aren't all that likable, but the movie skillfully gives them some dimension that makes them interesting to watch, enough so that you'll be sweating with them in some tense situations. I could accept just about everything that happened. This is one thriller that really works, namely because for the most part it unfolds in pretty believable fashion. Happily, I was pleasantly surprised by the end results. So I didn't know when stepping into this one what I would get. Not just with genre, but also in quality. Netflix exclusive movies, as I've said before, range wildly. It's an honest and well deserved 8.5/10 from me, rounded down to an 8 for the fake reviews. This would have increased the suspense and tension and made the film more enjoyable. This film should have been edited down to a max of 80-90 mins, or played back at 1.5x speed. My main complaint was the overly long 101 min length with the extremely slow pace. All actors where outstanding in their roles and very convincing in their characters. It did however end with a nice questionable 'next scene' to leave the viewer with their own conclusion. The writing was decent but a little predictable. Nevertheless, the directing and acting shined, the cinematography was great and together was enough to keep the viewer elevated in suspense throughout the entire film. We're not dumb and it's easy enough to click on the 10/10 users name and see it's their only review. It's a shame though that the producers felt the need to add so many clearly fake reviews to fool their potential audience.
Calibre 2018 movie review full#
This film this was a surprisingly well made B-grade British thriller by novice director and writer Matt Palmer, of which this is his first full length feature film. Easily a 9/10 for me, 100 minutes well spent.

I really felt for the two main protagonists in places, but felt the ending was right.

Even though there isn't really any over the top on screen violence in the movie, I still felt it was pretty gruesome. Highly recommended, but not for the squeamish.

It had me glued to the screen almost from start to finish, not many movies do that for me. This movie tells a very real story with realism you only see in top end productions. Martin McCann, Jack Lowden, Ian Pirie and Kate Bracken did a really good job and their acting was of a very high standard along with the rest of the cast. Tony Curran, I have seen many times before and I always expect good acting from him. There are always going to be flaws and holes in the plot, but this simple story only had a few minor ones that didn't detract from the movie at all. Just about everything about this movie was as close to perfect as you can get, some of the cinematography was simply awesome, it made me want to be there. Happily I ignored the red flags and sat down to watch what I thought might be a waste of time and got a very nice surprise. Vote rigging has become a big problem on here and I very nearly dismissed this movie based on these red flags. Unfortunately, based on past experience, a high rating with that few votes and one glowing review are normally huge red flags for me on IMDb. Before watching this movie I came here and read the one and only glowing review and looked at the voting and saw that out of 43 votes 46% had voted 10.
